A Brief History of Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort was built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah in 1512 and was also known as Muhammad Quli Shah’s Fort. The Fort served as a military outpost with a garrison of about 10,000 soldiers and was used primarily for keeping treasures and as a prison by later dynasties. It became a citadel with impregnable granite walls that could withstand any attack or siege imposed on it by its enemies. The fort is a massive structure of granite with three lines of fortification. 

It is said that the diamond mines of Golconda yielded some of the world’s most famous diamonds, including the Kohinoor and Hope Diamond. We might no longer have these treasures, but we sure can look at where they came from!

The name Golconda is a derivation of Golla Konda, which is what the fort was first called. It translates to Shephard’s Hill. It was named this because a shepherd discovered an idol of a god buried on this rocky hill. The boy presented the idol to his king and the Kakatiya rulers constructed a mud fort around this holy spot. Over the next 200 years, Bahamani rulers took possession of the fort and it was during their reign that the place was renamed Golconda, which stems from kona meaning big in Telugu.

At Golconda Fort, we entered through the impressive Fateh Darwaza—commonly known as the Victory Gate. Its clever architecture and approach through curved passages left no room for battering rams or elephants, safeguarding the massive entryway. The fort was only conquered by Aurangzeb after an insider betrayed its defenses.

One of Golconda Fort’s standout features is its impressive acoustic design. The echo of a clap from the gate can be heard all the way to the tower at the top, while the walls outside the queen’s bed chambers masterfully carry sound from one corner to another—a marvel of ancient engineering that continues to astound. Our son delighted in whispering secret messages into these historic walls, making our visit both fun and memorable.

The panoramic views from the top of the fort are breathtaking, offering a stunning vista of Hyderabad’s sprawling cityscape. Despite the smog dampening the clarity, you can still spot the historic Durgum Cheruvu Lake—the very water source that once sustained the fort during its prime. 

Before you begin your climb, challenge yourself by attempting to lift the legendary 250kg metal block, a test once used to prove strength for entry into the army ranks. While I didn’t try, my husband managed to drag it, a testament to its formidable heft.

The Golconda Fort Light & Sound Show is an immersive audiovisual experience that brings Hyderabad’s rich history to life. Set against the backdrop of the ancient fort, the show uses dramatic lighting, captivating sound effects, and narration to recount tales of valor, betrayal, and triumph. 

I remember watching it a (very, very) long time ago when it was just throwing colourful lights across different parts of the fort. It is much more sophisticated now.

As the fort’s storied past unfolds before your eyes, you’re transported back in time, gaining unique insights into its architectural marvels and historical significance. This mesmerising cultural experience is a must-see attraction for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike, offering an unforgettable glimpse into the legacy of Golconda Fort.

Check the Telangana Tourism website for show information. The tickets need to be bought separately for the first show from inside the fort. Remember to get some mosquito repellant.

Things to keep in mind when you visit Golconda Fort

When planning your visit to Golconda Fort, a top Hyderabad attraction, keep these tips in mind for a smooth experience. Arrive early—entry gates open at 9 am—to avoid the post-noon crowds and secure a spot in the paid parking area. 

With a nominal entry fee and clearly displayed charges for a certified guide, you can choose between a brisk 45-minute tour from the gate to the King’s Court at the top or a more leisurely 60- to 90-minute exploration that includes the mesmerising bedchambers and ‘talking walls’.

Remember that the tour involves a climb, so plan for rest stops along the way and bring your own water and light snacks, especially during the hotter months when shade is scarce. For an extra dose of history, catch the captivating light and sound show in the early evening (last entry around 5 pm) for a brief yet immersive narrative of this ancient fort.
