Tiramisu has always been one of our favourite desserts to enjoy when dining out. Its rich, creamy layers combined with the bold flavours of coffee and cocoa create an indulgent treat that’s hard to resist. Recently, I discovered just how easy a tiramisu recipe is to recreate this classic Italian dessert at home.
The idea of making tiramisu at home came about by chance. We had ordered a cake for a celebration, and it had Savoiardi biscuits on the periphery. It would’ve been too indulgent to have them with the cake so instead of letting them go to waste, I froze them, thinking they would be perfect for a homemade tiramisu. With Father’s Day approaching, it felt like the ideal occasion to try my hand at this beloved dessert.
Here’s the recipe I tried
Ingredients
- 200gm Mascarpone Cheese
- 200gm Whipping Cream
- 2 tbsp Icing Sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- 20 (approximately) Savoiardi biscuits
- 1 tbsp Instant coffee powder
- 2 tbsp Kahlua (or any coffee) liqueur (optional)
- 3 tbsp Water
- 1 tbsp Cocoa powder
Method
Prepare the Cream Mixture
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cheese, cream, sugar, and vanilla until well combined. My mixture didn’t stiffen into peaks, so I placed it in the freezer for a short while to help it firm up.
Prepare the Coffee Mixture
- On a flat plate, mix the coffee powder with water (at room temperature) and Kahlua.
Assemble the Tiramisu
- Dip each biscuit briefly in the coffee mixture and place them in a square or rectangular container to line the base.
- Spread a layer of the cream mixture over the soaked biscuits. If the cream is a little runny, don’t worry—it will firm up in the fridge.
- Add another layer of soaked biscuits on top of the cream layer, followed by another layer of the cream mixture.
Refrigerate
- Cover the container and refrigerate the tiramisu for a few hours or overnight to allow it to set and the flavours to meld.
Finish and Serve
- Just before serving, sift a spoonful of cocoa powder over the top of the tiramisu for a classic finish.
One of the best parts of making tiramisu at home is the control it gives you over the ingredients, especially the sugar. This way, you can adjust the sweetness to suit your taste. While it might take a few tries to get all the flavours perfectly balanced, the effort is well worth it. So, whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just indulging in a sweet treat, try this easy tiramisu recipe at home.
