Glam it Up!

We collect so many items throughout our lives. Some we keep because of their sentimental value, some we actually like, and some only because they were gifted or expensive.  Home decor tips All home decoration ideas start with a bit of clearing up. I’ve learned to declutter with a heavy heart. A lot of pieces I had collected during travels had outgrown their purpose. I gave them away to people who might appreciate them more. However, there are some decorative pieces that could be given a new lease of life with just a little effort. Repurpose memorial cups into planters, or decorate old boxes to use around the house. A touch of Gold I love gold highlights across the house. It adds a touch of sparkle and shine in unexpected places. This wooden deer was a souvenir from a Kenya trip but the dark wood was eating up all the light. So we turned this into a fun afternoon project and layered it up with some gold acrylic paint. I didn’t feel the need to …

Does it Spark Joy?

You might have heard the expression Does it Spark Joy quite a lot in the last year. If you haven’t, then what rock have you been living under all this while? The series KonMari Netflix has released was a revelation for me. The KonMari method of organisation is a game changer. And if you’re like me and derive great satisfaction from home makeover shows, then don’t miss this series. Season 2 is just around the corner. What is a KonMari method? The KonMari method was named after the decluttering and organisation guru Marie Kondo. The KonMari basics “encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and, finally, sentimental items. Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go”. There are numerous tutorials you can check, and even apply to become a KonMari consultant if that’s your thing.  She has a system of organising and …

DIY family hand casting

Hand Moulding – Preserving A Lifetime of Memories

By the time I saw all the ads for a baby hand and foot casting kit, my son was way past his tiny baby stage. But I still wanted to hold on to the memory of his tiny hands. When I started looking for ideas, there were just so many, including couple hand moulding and family hand casting ideas. I thought a sculpture with all three of our hands would be perfect. I ordered a hand moulding kit online and quickly tried it out. It was a failure, and it felt worse because these hand casting kits are expensive. The hand moulding process is a tricky one and you need to be quick. You also need to have extra material on hand in case things go wrong. They fail to mention this in the kits. I finally figured out a cheaper way to make my hand cast. It still took us a few tries to get it right but at least the materials were much cheaper. You’ll never waste money on expensive hand casting kits …

packaging box covered with wrapping paper repurposed to a cat food holder with a cat doodle on it saying feed me

Creative Ways to Reuse Cardboard Boxes

Up-cycled cardboard boxes is a great project to do, as well as a nice way to use up leftover packaging materials. These boxes have become an affordable way to get creative with your decor and can be transformed in a multitude of ways. What are some of your ideas? Go crazy and make a variety of boxes out of different types of plastic, like bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard or even tea bags. Our imaginations are the limitation here If you’re like me, you mostly shop online. Some are local stores that deliver in baskets they can take back. Mostly, you’re left with a bunch of packaging material of different kinds. I have tried to be cautious while shopping online. I try to group my orders together by the same vendor, but even after all that I usually get items shipped to me individually. Thankfully, I live in a community that’s serious about waste segregation and recycling. We have multiple vendors who come in to collect the dry waste for recycling. I try to reuse as …

Using old CDs to make a mosaic on a plain tray

How to Cut Old CDs and Make a Mosaic Tray

The CD Mosaic is a unique corner wall display for your home that provides an old CD with new life. The simple, yet beautiful design allows the disc to be appreciated for what it is: just another item in your collection. Remember when we had drawers full of cassette tapes? Some originals bought from the store, some blank ones with recordings from the radio, and a whole bunch of mixed tapes. Then came the CDs and DVDs. They saved a lot of space, but were soon obsolete. I haven’t had, or felt the need to have, an optical drive in my home for over eight years. So now what to do with all the CDs? There is a lot of clutter in our homes that we don’t use. We donate it to a general recycle bin and hope that tomorrow it will be replaced by something new. I saw this trick somewhere and knew I had to try. Yes, it repurposed some of my CDs, but it also looked awesome. This is the simplest and …

Old suitcase up-cycled to a bedside table with storage

DIY Suitcase & Vanity Organiser

Making do has its rewards, and the satisfaction that comes from re-purposing an old suitcase or some other found item is priceless. You don’t have to break the bank to add a little rustic chic style to your home’s decorating scheme. In fact, you don’t even have to spend money at all. In this post I will show you how I took an old hardcase vanity box and an old suitcase and turned them into custom storage. The best thing about the finished piece is my only outlay was some elbow grease and a can of spray paint. My mom doesn’t like to throw things till she absolutely must. Over the years we have found interesting things from her collection, and given away a lot of the rest.  Two of the things that were languishing in the corner were her hard case Samsonite suitcase and Aristocrat vanity case from her wedding. They have stood the test of time. There’s a metaphor somewhere there I’m sure. Both the items can no longer be used for their …

Paint pour try DIY

An easy acrylic pour painting DIY

A few years ago, one of the art trends that the whole world seemed to be trying was acrylic paint pour. It looked beautiful. Paint pouring is basically pouring different coloured paints on a canvas and swirling them a bit for a unique marbling effect. Because this is fluid art, you have little control of how the paint will flow. You can have some amount of control in how you pour and distribute it, but other than that it has a mind of its own. Which means that every single piece you make will be unique.  It’s a little more difficult than it looks in most videos. You need to get the consistency of the paint right, mix the right amount, and swirl it to get it across the whole board.  Start with a few smaller practice pieces to get a hang of it. I did not. I was overconfident and messed up big time. Learn from my mistakes people! Thankfully I was able to salvage the piece. I tried another one as a gift …
